Miley Cyrus Stalked by Ghosts in London

May 16th, 2013 No comments

Yes, it’s another addition to the list of celebrity ghost stories. Apparently Miley Cyrus had some paranormal activity in her London apartment during her 2009 tour. I’m terrible at research, so does anyone know if she had been smoking marijuana back then? Also, this is not the first time the Cyrus family has been linked to the paranormal…or featured  on our blog (see here, here and here, where Billy Ray Cyrus was supposed to host a show on SyFy).

Miley Cyrus says she saw ghosts in her London apartment

“A ghost? That’s pretty cool!”

The 20-year-old singer and her family rented an apartment in the English capital during her 2009 European tour but they had to move to a hotel after a number of ghostly encounters.

She told British Elle magazine: “It was seriously so terrifying. One night, my little sister — it sounds crazy to tell you — but she was standing in the shower and all of a sudden, I hear her scream. I run in there and the water had somehow flipped to hot but it was still … It wasn’t like the water had just changed, the knob had turned but she hadn’t turned it and it was burning her. She was really red.

“I thought I had seen a little boy sitting on the sink watching me take a shower so I felt really freaked out. I was sitting there the next night and maybe I’m crazy, but I could have sworn I could see this little boy sitting there on the sink, kicking his feet.”

The family later discovered the apartment was reportedly haunted and Miley has vowed never to stay there again.

She said: “We found out that there was this older man that owned it [the bakery that had once been in the building] and his son lived with him there, and I guess the wife died or something, she had gotten sick.

“So it was just the son and the dad that lived there in the bakery, and then the dad died and the son took over the bakery, and I thought I was seeing the son. I’m not even kidding.

“I had to move. That’s not a lie. I will never stay there ever again.”

I think it’s safe to say that ever since Ghost Hunters came on the air, any business that can charge admission of some kind is not “reportedly haunted.” Hell, it’s an easy way to make a buck, and all you have to do is make up some cliché, non-verifiable story, and the knuckleheads will eat it up and pay $200 to get in and investigate with 150 other knuckleheads. Like, totally seriously though, old faucets and valves can move on their own if they are old, broken,, and there’s enough water pressure. Like, totally.

Syfy Renews Haunted Highway; Changes Week From 7 to 9 Days to Give All 38 Paranormal Shows Primetime Slots

May 1st, 2013 No comments

I can’t even keep track anymore and I don’t even pretend to try. Shortly after announcing the renewal of “Ghost Mine,Syfy has announced its also renewing “Haunted Highway,” a critically acclaimed paranormal reality TV show starring Jack Osborne (son of Mumbles McGee). “Haunted Highway” will be shoehorned in premiering on July 24 with six new episodes, with “Ghost Mine” returning in September.

Jack Osbourne returns in the Syfy Channel's Haunted Highway.

Proof that Syfy will pretty much give anyone a TV show.

JACK’S BACK!

SYFY RENEWS HAUNTED HIGHWAY FEATURING JACK OSBOURNE, JAEL DE PARDO, DANA WORKMAN AND DEVIN MARBLE FOR A SECOND SEASON

NEW SIX EPISODE SEASON OF THE PARANORMAL REALITY SERIES TO PREMIERE WEDNESDAY, JULY 24 AT 10PM ET/PT

NEW YORK – April 22, 2013 – Syfy has ordered a second season of its hit paranormal reality series, Haunted Highway. The new six episode season will premiere, on a new night, Wednesday, July 24 at 10PM (ET/PT). The hour-long series follows two teams, Jack Osbourne & Dana Workman, and Jael de Pardo & Devin Marble, as they conduct their own first-person investigations into some of the most frightening claims of paranormal activity in some of America’s most remote regions.

Fueled by eyewitness interviews and evidence collected with state-of-the-art equipment, the two teams will self-document their harrowing face-to-face encounters with the paranormal. The new season features examinations and investigations that will take the teams off the beaten path in places like the Arizona desert, the Sierra Nevada mountains and bayous of New Orleans as they seek werewolf-like creatures, the Black Angel of Death, the ghosts of the famous Donner party and other paranormal phenomena.

This season, in a first for the series, all four cast members will join together for a special investigation of Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas. One of America’s largest and most remote coastal bases, Fort Jefferson is located in the Gulf of Mexico, 68 miles from Key West. Built in 1846 to protect one of the most strategic deep water anchorages in the United States, Fort Jefferson quickly became a horrifying prison fortress. The most famous prisoner of Fort Jefferson was Dr. Samuel Mudd, the physician who set the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth and was allegedly an accomplice in the assassination of President Lincoln. Many report that Dr. Mudd’s angry spirit has never forgiven those who wrongly imprisoned and tortured him. Though the island on which Fort Jefferson sits looks beautiful and tranquil, it is still known as “Death Island” for the number of fatalities among both soldiers and prisoners.

In its first season, Haunted Highway averaged 1.12 million total viewers, 538,000 Adults 18-49 and 618,000 Adults 25-54 – ranking #10 in Adults 25-54 during its Tuesday, 10-11PM (ET/PT) time period.

Haunted Highway is produced by BASE Productions. John Brenkus and Mickey Stern serve as executive producers.

I can’t wait for the premiere of “Haunted Antarctica.” You know it’s coming.

I Never Thought Syfy Would Stoop So Low

April 25th, 2013 1 comment

Yes folks, there is a very real possibility that “Deep South Paranormal” may be bumped up to become the second worst paranormal show ever. Syfy certainly has no shortage of ideas for TV shows. I’m more than a little amused at this casting call I found just now while searching for other stories to blog about (that are way less awesome than this and subsequently will not be blogged).

Little People Paranormal

This was the least offensive midget-related photo I could find

Good For You Entertainment in Los Angeles, CA is searching for little people paranormal investigators for a new reality show project being produced for the SyFy Channel. Ideally we are looking for little people with big personalities to possibly appear as cast members for our new show.

Time is of the essence so please respond quickly.

Thank you,

The Casting Team
Good For You Entertainment

They were short on time so I’m sure the applicant pool was pretty tiny. MUAHAHAHA GET IT?!

But seriously, folks, OMG. IF THIS SHOW EVER AIRS I WILL WATCH EVER FRIGGIN’ EPISODE.

500th Post: The Posts That Defined Us

October 11th, 2012 No comments
ghost hunters jumping off a cliff

“We are serious, scientific, and all of our investigations are provided completely free of charge!”

So this is officially our 500th post here at The Occult Section, and I thought I’d take a look back at some of the posts that have defined us over the past two years. Some of these posts have been extremely popular, getting us a huge number of hits and increasing our readership substantially. Others have been extremely controversial and sparked some pretty heated debates. Some posts have been read by some famous people in the paranormal community, which has surprised even us. And others are just typical silly stories we like to blog about because they make us chuckle. But they all, in some way or another, define what The Occult Section has evolved into, from its beginnings as a blog featuring paranormal book reviews to something a little more all-encompassing.

The Field Guide to North American Monsters

This review of W. Haden Blackman’s awesome book about all of the monsters of North America, including Bigfoot, Mothman, the Dover Demon, and lesser known monsters such as Goatman, the Deer woman, the Grinning Man, and the Nagumwasuck, was the first blog post we published, and I actually stole this from another site I used to run, called TheUnexplained.net. It was a precursor to The Occult Section, and was basically a blog before blogging became popular. That site covered news, movie reviews, TV shows, old documentaries, and book reviews. The book review section on that site was called, you guessed it, The Occult Section.

Cropsey: Staten Island’s Boogeyman?

The popularity of this post really surprised us, as the documentary “Cropsey” really has nothing to do with the paranormal. We blogged about it because it covered events that happened on Staten Island, where I lived at the time it was released, and the fact that it prominently featured Seaview and Willowbrook, places that are reputed to be haunted (and which we are very familiar with). The movie deals with suspected child killer Andre Rand and the children he is alleged to have murdered. The film was well-received, and our review of it, one of the first out there, is still one of our most popular posts ever.

Thoughts on Grant Wilson Leaving TAPS/”Ghost Hunters

Far and away our most popular post of all time, with (as of this writing) well over 40,000 hits. And this post also has the most comments and interaction. Love it or hate it, the SyFy Channel’s Ghost Hunters is a powerful force in the paranormal community, and it’s apparent from this post that people love Grant. Jason Hawes, not so much. We don’t watch Ghost Hunters anymore, don’t like the show anymore, and have been very critical of it over the years. But even we admit that Grant seemed to be the most sincere and genuine person on that show.

The Grant Wilson Exposé!

This post about the many similarities between Grant Wilson and Shaggy from Scooby-Doo had initially slipped under most people’s radar. Until Grant Wilson himself stumbled upon it and Tweeted it to all of his followers. Of course tons of people then read it and again, the feedback was overwhelming, with people thinking it was hilarious, and a few angry at themselves for not noticing the resemblance sooner. Grant himself even seemed to think it was funny. It’s always good when we can poke fun at someone for not being a douche, or someone who can also laugh at themselves.

Harsh Truths the Paranormal Community Needs To Hear

This was quite possibly our most controversial post ever. And we’ve done some pretty controversial posts in our time. Intended to be a brutally honest yet somewhat tongue-in-cheek criticism of what’s happening in the paranormal community, this post caused a handful of people who read it to totally flip out, taking it way too personally and far too seriously, and they quickly took to the internet to whine and moan. Truth be told, most people who read this post had great feedback for us, admitting that they were guilty of some of the things we were criticizing (we even plead guilty to a few of them ourselves) and just laughed it off. But as is usually the case, the craziest people trend to be the loudest, and we caught wind of a bunch of these brave souls criticizing us behind our backs. Because we don’t think people should churn out terrible books, or do everything in their power to get on TV, or claim that dust orbs are ghosts. And again, we just laughed it off. We know, the truth often hurts.

Interview with Loren Coleman

After reviewing Monsters of New Jersey, I decided to e-mail author Loren Coleman to see if he would agree to be interviewed by me for The Occult Section. I did this fully expecting to never hear back from him. I mean, he is a well-known author, TV interviewee, and curator of the International Cryptozoology Museum, as well as a blogger in his own right with Cryptomundo. So imagine my surprise when he not only wrote me back almost right away, but also agreed to be interviewed by me. Loren was cordial, down-to-earth and an all-around great guy. Always a nice thing to encounter when you finally get to speak to someone you respect and were inspired by.

Teen Ghost Hunters Jump off Cliff Fleeing ‘Haunted’ Sanatorium

This story, about a group of teenage ghost hunters fleeing from police until they accidentally fell off of a cliff, was getting an inordinately large number of hits, and we weren’t sure why. To this day, it’s still one of our most popular posts. Then we looked a bit more closely at out stats, and realized that the search term “man jumping off a cliff” in Google images was getting us most of the traffic. Why people want photos of this is beyond us. We understand why we wanted them, but then we’re a bit odd.

Funny PhotoShopped pics

While no single blog post can show off all of the funny pictures we’ve created in PhotoShop to accompany our posts, I feel like I had to mention them, as they have become a trademark of our site. Sometimes we don’t have the time to do full PhotoShopped photos, so we just use funny captions, which has also become one of our signatures (and we’ve noticed it being copied more and more on paranormal blogs). But the PhotoShopped pics are what we are most proud of, so we’ll end with some of our favorites from the past few years. Enjoy, and thank you for being loyal readers!

Jason Hawes: Ghost boxes are “holding the field back,” but his new paranormal app will be bitchin’

September 5th, 2012 5 comments

Earth to Jason Hawes: you are not the be all end all of the following things:

- the paranormal
- paranormal television shows
- Syfy

In a recent interview, Jason Hawes gave a thinly veiled yet undeniably negative insight into his views on another Syfy show that, like Ghost Hunters, involves a team traveling to various haunted locations and investigating. And, like Ghost Hunters, airs its new episodes Wednesdays at 9 p.m. This particular show frequently uses the ghost box Jason is referring to (in case I’m not being clear enough, I’m referring to Haunted Collector, which just completed its second season). Methinks someone feels threatened…

But there’s also a lot of equipment out there that becomes rather laughable that I’ve seen that I guess other people have brought into this field where, you know, these boxes that are generating voices, well the voices are words that are actually put in or programmed into these devices. So, you know, there’s a lot of things out there that I think are holding the field back and there’s a lot of technology out there dealing with infrasound and stuff like that that we’re really trying to bring to the forefront. So I think you’ll be able to see a lot of newer stuff coming out from us and to other areas.

Conveniently, he presented a partial solution to all those “things out there” that are “holding the field back” – he is in the process of developing a smartphone app that will “be able to take any Android and iPhones and iPads and all that stuff and be able to work off of meters that are built into them.”

A screenshot from said app

“And all that stuff” indeed, Mr. Hawes. All that stuff indeed. Those fuzzy details aside, I think it’s kind of hilarious to criticize one piece of equipment while promoting another that you yourself are developing.

At any rate, Syfy ought to get its shows in line stat and attempt some semblance of a united front. That is, of course, assuming Syfy isn’t loving the drama it’s creating between cast members and fans.

I dare say one of the biggest things holding this field back – out of many, many things – is Jason Hawes himself.

(Sidenote: This article gets an honorable mention here for mixing Frank Zappa and John Zaffis and creating Frank Zaffis).
