Alien-like Creature Found in New Jersey (Not a Joke)

February 16th, 2013 No comments

Ah, New Jersey. The nation’s perpetual punchline and punching bag. The Garden State (named for all of the factories and freeways, I guess) is in the news again, because of some vicious, alien-looking creature that was photographed there recently (the Snooki jokes are just way too easy here, so I will avoid them. Dammit!). Anyways, here’s the latest Jersey celebrity.

A sea lamprey was photographed in New Jersey, looking huge like an alien creature

Yet one more thing in New Jersey that sucks.

Forget all this chatter about exploding meteors and some asteroid making a dauntingly close pass to earth: There are aliens among us! Or so some might think after inspecting the image of a bizarre-looking denizen pulled from the waters of New Jersey.

The photo, containing no information other than the New Jersey reference, has gone viral on Reddit, garnering nearly 400,000 views in the first six hours after being posted on Friday.

Apparently, the creature, whose days of terrorizing other creatures are over thanks to the sharp point of a spear, is a very large sea lamprey.

Sea lampreys only measure to about three feet, so the specimen in this image must appear gigantic because of the camera angle. It also could be photoshopped.

A spokeswoman for New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation, when asked for a positive ID, stated via email: “The photo doesn’t allow counting of gill openings (seven per side for sea lamprey), but based on size alone, this does appear to be a sea lamprey.”

“It sucks the life out of fish,” reads one of hundreds of comments.

According to the DEC, sea lampreys are eel-like jaw-less and boneless parasites, boasting mouths full of rasping teeth and a file-like tongue.

Juveniles latch onto other fish and drain them of bodily fluids.

Most often, the prey, or host fish, dies as a result of either blood loss or infection.

Sea lampreys spend their egg and larval stages in fresh water. Once their bodies form and they become parasitic, they move out to sea to live off of a host fish.

In the Northeast, lampreys prey on other species of fish, including game fish, and are considered a nuisance species.

Therefore, in this instance, perhaps it’s good that the fisherman did not choose to practice catch-and-release.

“Because of the economic importance and profound effects of the sea lamprey on fish communities, its life history has been studied intensely,” states a U.S. Fish and Wildlife document on sea lampreys. “In the Bight, sea lampreys ascend to coastal streams in Long Island, New York, the New Jersey shore, and the Hudson River.”

Thankfully, if this image is an indication, there seems to be one less parasitic monster in our midst.

Ok, so it’s not an alien. But to me, the photo definitely looks PhotoShopped or altered in some way. The edges of the lamprey look almost too sharply defined compared to the rest of the picture. What do you think?

Hurricane Sandy – Places Where You Can Donate

November 3rd, 2012 No comments

As native New Yorkers and New York City residents, those of use here at The Occult Section are still reeling from Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath. Many people died, businesses and waterfronts were destroyed, and thousands are still without power, food, water and shelter.

As such, we do not feel comfortable blogging just yet. We will be back soon, but for now we are asking people to help in any way they can. Below is a list, which we will continue to add to, of places where you can donate and/or volunteer. Places you may have never heard about, like Staten Island, Coney Island, the Rockaways, and Seaside have been decimated, and these people need as much help as they can get. If you know a place that we don’t have listed here, please feel free to e-mail us. Thank you.

If you or somebody you know needs to file for assistance because of the storm, use the link below.

Photo of the Week: Dante’s Inferno

October 7th, 2012 No comments

We took a little hiatus last week from posting a Photo of the Week, as we were busy investigating, but we return this week with an object that we investigated that was believed to be haunted.

A little over a year ago, we were contacted by a client in New Jersey who was experiencing some unusual activity in her home, and had taken a picture that had an unusual shadow in it. She contacted a local New jersey paranormal group, who looked at the photo and immediately told her that she had a demon and that they would need to investigate ASAP. Thankfully she realized that this group was jumping to conclusions in the hopes of scaring her into being allowed to investigate, and contacted us for a second opinion. We went out in a small team with some basic equipment to see what was going on. We were able to debunk the picture and found nothing else that made us believe there was anything paranormal going on. She did, however have a very old copy of Dante’s Inferno by Dante Alighieri that she picked up from a garage sale years back. the previous owner had made many notes and scribbles in this tome, and it definitely added to the creepy factor. But ultimately, we found nothing paranormal about the book. But it still made a great picture.

Photo of the Week: Chalfonte Hotel, Cape May, New Jersey

August 26th, 2012 No comments

This week’s photo is of the Chalfonte Hotel in Cape May, New Jersey. Built in 1876 by Civil War Colonel Henry Sawyer, this southern-style hotel was originally intended to be a boarding house, and to this day still boasts original antiques and fixtures throughout. Many locations in Cape May are reputed to be haunted, and the Chalfonte is no different. The ghost of a maintenance man supposedly still tries to fix things at the hotel to this day.

Photo of the Week: The Southern Mansion

July 15th, 2012 No comments

This week’s photo is of the Southern Mansion, in Cape May, New Jersey. Built in 1863 by Philadelphia industrialist George Allen, the house today is reported to be haunted by Allen’s last relative to live in the mansion, Ester Mercur. The house stood in disrepair until 1994, when the Bray/Wildes bought it and restored it to its current state. The apparition of Ester Mercur is still reportedly seen in the home, mainly in the kitchen area, and people report smelling her perfume and hearing her laughing. The mansion has of course been featured on a variety of paranormal television shows like Ghost Hunters and Most Haunted. This photo was taken by our own Laura Pennace of Pennace Photography back in 2010, when we went down to have our own guided tour of Cape May’s haunted hot spots by our resident expert on Cape May, Shannon Baker.
