Far Side Friday 10/7/11

October 7th, 2011 No comments

Growing up, I was a faithful reader of The Far Side by Gary Larson. My dad always brought home his newspaper from work (do people still even read newspapers on actual paper anymore?) and I’d go straight to the comics section to read The Far Side. I’ve always loved the humor of Gary Larson, even if some of his cartoons made seemingly no sense. But one of the things I liked most about him was that he often dealt with things in the paranormal realm, like UFOs, Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, ghosts, and anthropomorphic cows (which I think would fall under the “cryptozoology” category). Anyways, I’ve recently rediscovered The Far Side, as I have most of the book collections of the cartoons and have been reading them at night before bed. So I figured I’d share a few of my favorite paranormally-themed Far Side cartoons on Fridays. I’m apparently a fan of alliteration, too.

This week’s cartoon is one of my favorites, and I think it’s funny how movies and TV shows always show us either the best or worst of our own traits in aliens. They are either gentle helpers (like in “E.T.”) or apocalyptic invaders (“Independence Day”). We rarely get to see the other human traits, such as the tendency to do something clumsy and embarrassing at the exact wrong moment.

This week’s cartoon features my favorite cryptid, Bigfoot. As a kid, I really loved this cartoon, because as an avid reader of all things Bigfoot, I knew that one thing that seemed to be reported with almost all Bigfoot sightings was that the local wildlife would go quiet, and I actually got this joke (not always an easy thing with The Far Side). Larson may have just been going for a generic hairy monster in the woods (note the claws instead of ape-like hands and human-like feet), but a great cartoon nonetheless, and one that draws from actual accounts. A classic in my book.

This week’s cartoon deals with a clumsy ghost falling into some bean dip and revealing himself. If only ghosts would actually do this, ghost hunters would have a much easier time of things. Expressions are the best parts of Larson’s cartoons, and I love how Edna is just pointing.

This week’s cartoon deals with UFOs, and why there probably aren’t more pictures of aliens and UFOs. This is why I’m glad we live in an age of digital photography. But even then, the radiation from the UFO would probably screw up the photo anyways. I love the look on poor Warren’s face.

This week’s cartoon deals with UFOs, and how things could go horrifically and hysterically wrong. And of course the aliens make first contact with a farmer named Roy, who dooms us all.
