The Race to Publish Findings on Bigfoot DNA

July 30th, 2012 No comments

Ah, Bigfooters. They’re not nearly as crazy or as bombastic as ghost hunters, but sometimes they can give them a run for their money. I firmly believe that if any so-called paranormal phenomenon will be solved and/or explained during our lifetimes, it would be the Bigfoot mystery (sorry, fellow ghost hunters, but we are barely beginning to scratch the surface in our field, and way too many people are muddling the view with wonky science and fame-seeking). A lot of interesting research has been done on the big hairy fella, and a lot of it promises to be interesting. And it promises and promises, and keeps on promising, but so far, zilch. This story illustrates exactly what I mean.

Bigfoot DNA

“I’ll…ummm…gladly donate some DNA for your…study…”

During the first half of Coast to Coast AM on Friday, July 27, 2012, the guest was Rhettman Mullis, the scientific mind behind Team Bigfootology. Aside from his story of Patrick, the human-Bigfoot hybrid, and his revelations regarding the Bigfoot language, Mullis’ made one tiny statement that seemed to go unnoticed: “I already know what one of the outcomes are and I’m not at liberty to discuss that.”

According to Rhettman Mullis, he and his team are the only people using a true scientific method to conduct Bigfoot research in North America. They’re working closely with Bryan Sykes, former professor of Human Genetics at University of Oxford, who is also conducting DNA research on Bigfoot hair samples at at Lausanne Museum of Zoology in Switzerland.

During his interview with George Noory on Coast to Coast AM, Mullis slipped in the following statement:

“I already know what one of the outcomes are and I’m not at liberty to discuss that. But it’s a very exciting conclusion. And so, what we’re hoping is, now that we have that answer, let’s see what Dr. Sykes comes up with and let’s see how they compare, because he’s the one that’s going to put this in the history books and put this in the biology books as fact.”

Bryan Sykes’ research project is currently in the sample submission stage. Samples may be submitted for DNA analysis, at no expense, until September. DNA analysis will be conducted during the month of November and Sykes hopes to publish results as early as December of 2012.

Sykes is well known in academic circles for his ground-breaking techniques for analyzing ancient DNA. His technique for extracting DNA from centuries-old human bones led to his theory that all Europeans are descended from seven distinct females. His book, “The Seven Daughters of Eve”, is fascinating reading and written in a style that makes it easy for anyone to read and understand.

Dr. Melba Ketchum has also been working on Bigfoot DNA research here in the United States for quite some time, and Bigfoot enthusiasts have been waiting for her to publish her peer-reviewed paper since April 2012. In an angry outburst from Ketchum which turned up on her Facebook news feed this week, Ketchum had this to say in response to an article posted by Robert Lindsay at “Bigfoot News: July 12, 2012”:

“The manuscript is NOT at the Nature Group! How many times do I have to say this? There is no pub date yet! Those pics are not real either, it looks like the hair is mounted on something fake (or tanned) and it really looks more like tanned coyote hide. The morphology is wrong for BF hair. Talk about grasping at straws. I wish people would stop bombarding me with emails every time all this fiction gets posted but that is all it is, fiction. Geez…. Ok, now that I have responded this time, this is the last post I am going to comment on the subject of this blog….and I am not going to waste my time answering any emails on it either. Just know, whatever that blog says as it pertains to ANYTHING we are doing or know, it is NOT true and I will not address this again. There are no leaks from our group and NOBODY, even the submitters, know anything at this time as the dynamics of the study have radically changed. I have way too much to do to than to answer a lot of emails. I don’t want to be rude and not answer so I am posting this as an answer to all. Please do not expect anything further until the paper is released. Thanks everyone and I appreciate the support.”

Read the whole story at “Robert Lindsay: Ketchum DNA paper should publish from August 21 – September 4, 2012 (Update: Ketchum responds)”

So, Dr. Ketchum says, “The dynamics of the study have radically changed”, and Rhettman Mullis says,“I already know what one of the outcomes are and I’m not at liberty to discuss that.”

So far, no one’s letting any details slip, and gossip has it that leaking information at this point will either jeopardize Ketchum’s research paper or dim the limelight she’s been basking in.

Sykes seems to have definitive milestones set up for his research project, though, something that Ketchum has never seemed to be able to do. Sykes also has the backing of a major university and museum, and a scientific research staff to keep things moving along.

The race is on. If Ketchum can’t, or won’t, publish her paper before Sykes publishes in December, she might as well hang it up. Either way, December promises to be a very interesting month for Bigfoot fans.

A lot of people keep claiming they have “exciting” finds from their DNA research, and it either never gets released, or we end up with stories like the debacle we had last year with the “Bigfoot face smudges.” I do understand the need for these researchers to be patient, and not release anything until all the results are in. But the bottom line is people have to stop with the cryptic “I-know-something-you-don’t-know” statements. Either publish your findings, or keep quiet. Otherwise, you just look like every other hoaxer out there who makes big promises they can never deliver on.

Photo of the Week: Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, PA

July 29th, 2012 No comments

Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Eastern State Penitentiary is perhaps one of the most famous haunted locations in the country. The prison opened in 1829 and closed its doors as a prison in 1971. During that time, the prison was home to thousands of criminals, with the most notorious among them being bank robber Willie Sutton and the infamous gangster Al Capone. These days, the prison is best known for supposedly being haunted, a fact that has been popularized by TV shows such as MTV’s Fear, Ghost Hunters, Most Haunted and Ghost Adventures. Every Halloween season, Eastern State Penitentiary runs its annual “Terror Behind the Walls” event, where patrons can take a tour of the “haunted prison.” The prison is also a popular, if not the most popular, place for paranormal investigators to investigate. Some skeptics claim that the paranormal activity and ghost stories reported at Eastern State Penitentiary are a result of the TV shows and haunted tours, but records show that inmates and prison officials were reporting supernatural phenomena since the 1940s.

‘Beast of Brooklyn’ Washes Ashore in New York City

July 27th, 2012 2 comments

Most people will probably remember the Montauk Monster that washed up in the Hamptons back in 2008, or the Cerro Azul monster that we blogged about last September. Now it seems that another strange, hairless, bloated creatures has washed ashore, this time at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, and people have already dubbed it the “Beast of Brooklyn” or “Manhattan Monster.”

When the article mentioned the “Beast of Brooklyn,” I was expecting to see pictures of this girl I went to junior high school with. Thankfully, this is far less disturbing.

Mystery surrounds the discovery of a hideous creature washed up under the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.

Dubbed the “Manhattan monster,” its ghoulish carcass has a mutilated face, hairless flesh and five human-like fingers at the end of its limbs. The gruesome find has sparked an array of theories as to whether it is a giant water-logged rodent, a cooked pig, a swollen dog — or something more sinister.

Amateur photographer Denise Ginley snapped the mutant creature while walking along the East River on Sunday.

“We were horrified by it and we took some camera phone pictures,” she said. “Then finally we decided to come back with my camera and I got up the courage to climb over the fence and get closer to it.”

Some claim it could be related to the mystery “Montauk Monster,” which confounded New Yorkers when it washed up at Ditch Plains beach in the exclusive Hamptons in July 2008.

But the New York Parks Department shrugged off the horrifying find, insisting it was just a pig.

A spokesman said they had disposed of the creature, adding: “It was a pig left over from a cookout.”

“It was a roasted pig. We didn’t count its toes, we just threw it out.”

But people doubting the official line point to the beast’s creepy, human-like hands and feet — which bear no resemblance to a porker’s hooves.

“The Parks Department was probably very quick to identify it as a pig and dispose of it, but it is most certainly not a pig,” Ginley added.

“The most obvious sign being the lack of a cloven hoof, instead this creature has five digits all close together.”

She believes the creature is “some sort of raccoon or giant rodent.”

The photographer said: “The missing upper jaw makes it very difficult to identify and the lack of distinct canine teeth of the lower jaw is confusing.”

Wildlife specialist Dr. Paul Curtis suggests it could be a small dog that died and swelled in the murky river.

I know this may be news to people outside New York City, but we New York natives are pretty used to having bloated carcasses and strange things floating in the East River. All kidding aside (yeah…I was just…kidding), this definitely seems to be just some normal animal that is in a stage of decay that just makes it look a little otherworldly. What do you think it is?

Ghostly Image Seen in Photo After Looking Real Closely

July 26th, 2012 No comments

It happens all too often. Someone will stare at a photograph long enough to start seeing ghosts or strange things in the background. Or they will listen to a piece of audio and when the typical white noise fluctuates a bit, they miraculously hear a voice. People will often see what they want to see, and hear what they want to hear. The human brain tries to make order out of chaos. This is why we see shapes in clouds. It can be a great tool for our creativity. But it can also deceive us, and far too many people automatically assume what they’re seeing must be paranormal. Case in point: this story about a picture taken 50 years ago (the author of this article can’t do math, apparently) that supposedly contains a picture of a ghost that nobody ever noticed until six weeks ago.

Hey…can the rest of us get a look at this ghost?

A ghostly apparition from Lourdes is quickly becoming a major talking point in one Limerick city’s accessories shop.

A photo taken of a group of parishioners who travelled to Lourdes nearly 60 years ago has captured what appears to be a ghostly apparition behind the congregation.

The photo, which is in the window of Glow Fashion Accessories on Denmark Street, has been causing quite a stir among passers-by since it was put on display by the shop owner Deirdre O’Grady last week.

The eerie image shows a group shot of the Franciscan Pilgrimage to Lourdes in 1962.

However it wasn’t until six weeks ago that the supernatural figure was spotted by its owners while redecorating.

“The photo was hanging in my husband’s parents’ house for 50 years,” says Deirdre O’Grady. “My sister-in-law was part of the group which had travelled as part of the Franciscan Pilgrimage to Lourdes in 1962 and the photo had been hanging on the wall since. It was only in the last few weeks my brother-in-law took it down as he was repainting the house and the apparition in the photo was spotted,” she explains.

“The image had gone unnoticed until six weeks ago. My brother-in-law Des showed it to me three weeks ago and I thought it was fantastic and that it should be shown,” adds Deirdre.

“I decided to put it up in the window last week and within a day it had attracted a lot of attention,” she says.

“I don’t know what it is myself,” says Deirdre. “I’m open minded and I’m leaving it open to being scrutinised. People are welcome to come and make up their own minds. I’ll be leaving it up for the next week at least,” she adds.

I think it’s interesting that the article doesn’t show a nice closeup shot of the alleged ghost, just a young girl making a silly face and pointing to a black blob on the photo. So it’s basically impossible for the reader to make up their own mind. Point of story is, if you have to strain really hard (or for 50 years) to see of hear something, it’s not worth straining to see of hear.

Bigfoot Replica for Sale on eBay

July 25th, 2012 No comments

It seems like a lot of people are trying to cash in on Bigfoot lately (literally), so I wasn’t surprised to come across this article about a man selling a supposedly “accurate” Bigfoot statue. The eBay listing, of course, it pure gold.

In 1976, after years of study and research, a young man named Clifford LaBrecque undertook a challenge that stunned the Bigfoot world. Mr. LaBrecque built one of the best detailed “museum quality” models of Bigfoot. How he did it is a mystery that will probably never be known. One look and it shouts this is the “real thing”–eyes that follow you, and hands, fingers, and toes, are all in great detail. This fantastic piece of work has been stored for over 30 years. This is the first opportunity you have to own Bigfoot. It can be a tremendous attraction for showing this part of American folklore.

All inquiries about this piece should be directed to Clifford LaBrecque at 1-870-291-1863. THE ITEM LOCATION IS IN ARKANSAS TO BE PICKED UP THERE.

First of all, I think it’s a pretty bold claim to say that he “stunned the Bigfoot world.” It’s a replica, not a an actual stuffed Bigfoot. I also love the claim that “How he did it is a mystery that will probably never be known.” It’s a giant mannequin with fur. I don’t think there’s a huge mystery here.

It should be noted that Mr. LaBrecque claims that a Bigfoot attacked him while he was trying to shoot it. And his up-close and personal experience gave him insight into the details of what a Bigfoot actually looks like. That and hypnosis.

The Bigfoot replica is selling for $80,000, and is available for local pickup only. There are no bids on the stature as of yet.
