So What is the Plural for “Bigfoot?”

January 28th, 2011 No comments

One question I am asked over and over again by people is “What is the plural form of ‘Bigfoot?’” Most people want to say “Bigfeet” or “Sasquatches,” but both of those are incorrect. And a lot of people don’t believe me when I say that the plural form is the same as the singular. You can spot a Bigfoot, or a whole family of Bigfoot. Just like you can see one sheep, or a whole family of sheep. But for those of you who still don’t believe me, or understand why this is, cryptozoology authority Loren Coleman just posted an extensive article explaining why this is over on his Cryptomundo site:

bigfoot, family guy, bigfeet, sasquatch, sasquatchesI penned some remarks on this subject five years ago. It appears to be time to have it resurface, recombined, as some people are beginning again to lose track of what the big hairy gals and guys have traditionally been called.

The late Kelly McGillis of Canada once asked me on a yahoolist, “What is the plural of Sasquatch?”

To which I replied:
“The plural and singular of Sasquatch and Bigfoot are Sasquatch and Bigfoot.

“More than one Abominable Snowman and Yeti are Abominable Snowmen and Yetis.”

Please avoid letting me hear “Sasquatches”!

:-)

No, no, no “Bigfeet” allowed in here.

Some nouns, particularly the names of animals and fish, have the same form in singular and plural. Historically and grammatically correct is the word “Bigfoot” for singular and plural, just as “sheep” means one sheep and two or more sheep.

There are a number of animals that have the same singular and plural form, for example:
antelope – antelope
buffalo – buffalo
bison – bison
mink – mink
otter – otter
bass – bass
deer – deer
moose – moose
swine – swine
pike – pike
trout – trout
goldfish – goldfish
species – species
sheep – sheep

The article goes into great detail explaining when and why plural or singular forms are used for different cryptids. It’s a great resource for anyone writing articles on unknown monsters and needs to know what form to use.

Deputies respond to phony Bigfoot call

January 27th, 2011 No comments

Sometimes I feel like things all balance out in the universe, eventually. So to counter yesterday’s interesting Bigfoot story, today comes news of some deputies called out because some kids were supposedly dressing up as Bigfoot (or a seaweed monster). I love small town newspapers, and how things like this make the news there.

"Mom, why don't the girls like me?"

Shasta County deputies tonight responded to a report of two people dressed as Bigfoot, which turned out to be only a couple of kids goofing off.

Just before 8 p.m. dispatchers reported two people dressed as Bigfoot or possibly seaweed monsters.

Responding deputies found two boys who weren’t actually dressed up, but near one of their parents’ homes messing around.

A deputy didn’t have any more information.

What did these kids look like to be reported as Bigfoot or seaweed monsters, but not actually be wearing any costumes?

Bigfoot Captured on Security Camera?

January 26th, 2011 2 comments

bigfoot, sasquatch, security camera, bigfoot videoIt’s not too often that I use other blogs as a source for news items, but Javier Ortega over at Ghost Theory has a knack for digging up juicy paranormal items, and this story is no different. It’s been a while since any really good Bigfoot video has been taken, but this caught my eye, as the figure is almost definitely bipedal. And interestingly, the gait of this figure seems eerily similar to the Patterson-Gimlin footage.

The footage seems to show a large, hairy biped emerge from behind the forked tree trunk, and walk offscreen. It’s almost as if it knew the camera was on him (or her). Which would make sense, if it was a hoax. It’s blurry, grainy, like many other suspected Bigfoot videos, but I feel this one is more interesting than most. Below you can see the original footage, a zoomed-in version, and then subsequent footprints that were found. What do you think?

Indonesian Crop Circles: Evidence of UFOs?

January 24th, 2011 No comments

I’m not really a big fan of crop circles. Nothing about them really suggests that there’s anything paranormal about them, especially since it’s been proven time and time again that humans with some rope and a wooden board can reproduce them pretty easily. I know there are sometimes trace amounts of radiation or molecular damage to the crops involved, but that doesn’t scream “UFO” to me. I’d like to think that any intelligent life from another planet that has mastered interstellar travel can communicate more effectively than drawing circles in a wheat field. However, they do tend to excite people and stir the imagination. Asia One News reports that a new crop circle formation was found yesterday morning.

Maybe they're just not good at doing portraits?

INDONESIA – Indonesian Air Force chief Marshall Imam Sufaat on Monday instructed his staff to use a helicopter to take aerial photographs of crop circles discovered on Sunday in Krasakan hamlet, Sleman, with residents alleging them to be traces of a UFO.

“If we examine the photographs, we will possibility see if the patterns were in fact created with powers beyond human knowledge,” Imam said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com, on the sidelines of the Air Force commander meeting in Yogyakarta.

Imam, however, declined to comment further on the geometric pattern.

The crop circles are in a paddy field and resemble a geometric artwork, while the other parts of the field remain untouched.

The patterns were first reported by a farmer, Tukiman, on Sunday at 6 a.m.

The pattern has already drawn hordes of locals and people from outside Yogyakarta, causing traffic jams in the vicinity.

For me, the patterns would have to be amazingly complex before I even considered something in the paranormal realm actually being responsible for them. It’ll be interesting to see what the photographs show.

Update: Fox News now has the story up as well, along with a picture of the crop circle. As I suspected, it doesn’t look any different than any other crop circles we’ve seen up until this point. I’m going to go out on a limb and call this a hoax.

Ghost hunters denied request to investigate haunted house

January 22nd, 2011 5 comments

In yet another story of ghost hunters being denied access to a location, The Republic in Columbus, Indiana reports that county commissioners have denied a request by local paranormal investigators to investigate a supposedly haunted house.

access denied, denied, ghost hunters, the occult section, new york paranormal societySPENCER, Ind. — Owen County commissioners have denied a request by paranormal researchers to check for ghosts in the former county home.

The Indiana Society for Paranormal Investigations asked permission this week to come in at night and search the dilapidated brick structure for traces of ghosts.

But commissioners in the southern Indiana county say there’s already been enough research done at the former home for the old, infirm and mentally ill that was built in 1878 and abandoned in 2002.

Another group visited the home last year with equipment such as electromagnetic field detectors, voice recorders and laser beam motion detectors. The Herald-Times of Bloomington reports the group told commissioners they detected no ghosts but did encounter a number of low-flying bats.

The interesting thing here is the question of why the request was denied. It’s obviously not a “respect for the dead” or a “respect for the mentally ill” issue, as they’ve already allowed paranormal investigators in. It’s quite possible that they believe there’s been enough research done, as they claim, but this article only mentions one other group. Maybe they’re afraid of another group coming in and possibly finding some evidence, which would then create a buzz about the place, and naturally lead to more teams requesting investigations, as well as the token trespassers. We goof a lot on businesses who want to be haunted for better business here at The Occult Section, but this is the other side of the coin. Some places would rather that the stories die away. This might be one of those cases.
